Steam engine – How does it work and what is the history behind it?

The steam engine was invented back in 1705 by Thomas Newcomen. His invention was groundbreaking and we know this due to the fact that the steam engine was the first that saw such a widespread use. As such, the steam engine is thought to be one of the greatest inventions of the human race.
Its working principle is pretty simple. Steam engines perform mechanical work by using steam as working fluid. These machines burn coal to release the heat energy it contains.
