Jeff Bezos wants to build a space station in orbit

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos has announced that his company Blue Origin will build an orbiting space station in partnership with Sierra Space , the BBC reported on October 26. Dubbed Orbital Reef , the station will accommodate up to ten people and will be operational at best during “ the second half of the decade ”.

The second richest man in the world, like Elon Musk , has ambitions that far exceed planet Earth. But their objectives differ significantly, the boss of Amazon being more focused on space tourism. Blue Origin and Sierra Space announced on Monday that they wanted to build a private space station. A project they describe as a “ Mixed-use commercial arcade ”.

“ Experienced space agencies, high-tech companies, nations without a space program, media and travel agencies, subsidized entrepreneurs and inventors, future-oriented investors, all will have their place ” in the space station, the companies said in a statement. The station will be similar to the International Space Station ( ISS ) in shape. It will evolve at an altitude of 500 km (almost 100 km higher than the ISS) and will measure 830 cubic meters (against 388 for the ISS).

“ As a former NASA astronaut , I have waited a long time for the moment when working and living in space would be accessible to more people around the world, and that moment has arrived, ” enthuses Janet Kavandi , president of Sierra Space , the company working with Blue Origin on the project. It remains to be seen at what price.
